The Songwriting Sessions: A Creative Practice for Youth Empowerment
Discover your authentic musical voice in The Songwriting Sessions, Apple Tree Arts’ Creative Youth Development pilot program happening this fall.
In The Songwriting Sessions, faculty member Alex Calabrese will guide students in exploring various musical genres, crafting lyrics, composing melodies, and gaining confidence in the recording process. During the sixteen-week program, students age 11-13 and 14-18 will come together virtually for an hour each week, and will also receive a 45-minute one-on-one coaching each month. At the end of the session, students will have a recorded EP of several songs written on their own or in collaboration with other students.
This program specifically aims to use songwriting as a tool to strengthen confidence and knowledge of self; build artistic, problem-solving, and expressive skills; and develop empathy, respect for others, and an increased ability to communicate with a diverse set of people. Students will be required to self-assess in these areas at the beginning and end of the program.
Some experience with a musical instrument is recommended but not required. Students who don’t own an instrument can borrow a keyboard from ATA. Alex will meet students at their skill level and assist each individual in improving, experimenting, and defining their own style.
